Ever since I heard of Masdar City about a decade ago I was obsessed with the idea that cities can and should be built from ground up as sustainable and energy efficient as we can make them to serve the greater good of humanity while having balance with our fellow creatures and environment. Masdar City is building a model city designed for the future but applications of their architecture and technology can be used today.
Since 2006 Masdar, or Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, is a global leader in renewable energy and sustainable urban development. Masdar City is a planned city project in Abu Dhabi, in the UAE.
As humans we become too attached to ways of being even after it no longer serves us or even worse, destroys us. There are a multitude of reasons why as a society we don't progress, there are economic set backs, cultural and religious residence and marketing hypocrisies.
Education plays a major role in human development, thus the way we teach today must include, empathy toward our fellow creatures and toward each other, foresight and strategic planning for our species to have a fighting chance against climate change, technological advancement and social injustices.
I was invited to visit Masdar City by H.E. Otaiba Saeed Al Otaiba from Abu Dhabi, I had met him a few days earlier at a farm with my good friend Awad Mohammed Bin Sheikh Mujrin, chairman of the Emirates Traveller's Festival, of which I was invited to talk about my adventures walking across Africa. Otaiba also being interested in the future of humanity with sustainability and clean energy brought us together to do a tour at the facility lead by Mohammad Rajab (Senior Executive at Masdar).
It was an absolute pleasure to have a tour by and with these amazing individuals with vested interested in renewable energy and use Masdar City as a reference to advance the development and adoption of commercially viable solutions in renewable energy and sustainable real estate to address the sustainability challenges in the UAE and internationally.
I've learned about Masdar City's self driving and 100% emissions free vehicles. The buildings in Masdar City are designed to naturally cool up t 10 degrees celsius lower in the hot sun compared to the temperature outside of the city. The effects are obvious and immediate as soon as you step inside Masdar. Everything was designed to help reduce waste and make every piece of material in the city useful for something. What also blew my mind was how these buildings look like a throwback to cities designed thousands of years ago with the addition of newer technologies of course.
I have met in the last few months some of the most passionate and intelligent individuals on this planet. Leaders like Juan Carlos Santos, the former president of Columbia who signed the peace treaty between the Fargos or the current president of Sierra Leone (Julius Maada) who's leading the country in the democratic direction and the first lady (Fatima Jabbe) who spoke with me about the future of Africa regarding renewable and sustainable energy. There are hand full of people working on solving problems, the problem is that they are far and few.
Nothing is too small or insignificant, with myself, I literally just started with my first step. Lets create a world together in which where we can continue to thrive. Not a utopia but a lets point in that direction.
There may even be a possibility of Project EVA working together with Masdar City so crossing fingers and pushing possibilities.
A modern explorer recently finished a voyage of walking across Africa entirely by foot and kayak.
