This is an advice from me to everyone, it also applies to myself. If you want to go on a week long camping trip, lose 20 pounds or perform a meaningful speech do you just wing it, rely on your instincts or do nothing? All of the above will set you up for failure. Success stories have a backbone no matter how trivial.
Vision, preparation and action are the 3 fundamental stages one most go through in order to accomplish anything well in life. These are based on my own experiences, research and observations of other people who have accomplished success in their lives follow their dreams, or simply just want to try out something new.
Have a vision, a drive or dream then turn it into passion. To get to the next stage start asking questions pertaining to what it is you want, find out how to make it possible. Surround yourself with people who inspire you with these visions. Before I walked across Africa I trained by walking 600km from Toronto to Montreal with Donna Foster who inspired me to walk because she was already someone who has accomplished a lot in the speed walking community and her passion for the sport rubbed off on me. She also helped push my boundaries on what I thought was normal which I needed in order to walk across Africa. The great Pyramids were built with a vision, Steve Jobs built computers with a vision, they are only limited to what you perceive to be too great or little.
Prepare yourself by doing all the necessary research, training and planning, the more you know the more flexibility you can apply to whatever it is you'd like to do. Intuition should only come from applied practices that have proven itself time after time again. No baby walks because of intuition, he learns from seeing and repeats many times over until walking becomes intuitive to him. No man or woman is a great speaker, he learns by engaging with audiences, small or big until he becomes comfortable. We only see the successes that people go through and forget the obstacles, learning curves and struggles they needed to get there. If you plan your dreams now it is probably possible if you follow through. Most people don't even get to this stage.
Apply your passions to actions. Without action you have nothing but dreams that haunt you until your last breath. Fear for most people begins here. Dive in, there is no easy way, if you have an over looming fear take baby steps, this can also be your preparation. You living your dream has nothing to do with your worth, your worth can only be measured by your effort, if your visions are being applied. I have spoken to countless amounts of people about their dreams, most of theirs are dormant waiting for the right opportunity or moment to magically take action. I will tell you this, that's not how you will accomplish your visions or dreams and it will be no one's fault but yours.
A case story.
William Kambwama was a 16 your old boy who lived in a rural village in Malawi without electricity. While everyone did nothing but complain and expected aid to help them the boy did something remarkable. He had a dream to power his village with electricity, so he found some books on how to do this, he then applied his knowledge to action and built his neighborhood a windmill that powers their cellphones and lights.
Here is William's full story on Ted Talk.
Be responsible for yourself, stop complaining about things and begin to take action, do whatever it takes. Your visions are the world's solution to many problems and missing links, when you do not apply them and take action they will sit and die with you, this benefits no one. Build a better future now.
